We've all been victims of #FastFashion.
At this point, we’ve also heard about the many self-defeating consequences towards the environment and the labour exploitation the people that make these clothes have been suffering since Fast Fashion made its way through the world.
If by any chance, you don’t know what Fast Fashion really is, I'll explain it to you briefly.
The term #FastFashion basically refers to the reduction of cloth’s prices made in multiple quantities.
Most of the time, they use low quality fabric on their clothes.
Because of the many known brands that take part in the fast fashion industry, us as consumers tend to enter a vicious cycle, which can be hard to get out of, but not impossible.
Have you notice the reduction of quality that there is in our clothes more and more?
Fast Fashion companies realized they can use the worst quality there is for their clothes, in exchange of having a really low price spent in them.
That’s why the poorest countries are the ones who sustain theirselves by workforce.
As a consequence, the clothes with this type of fabric end up being really cheap for the buyers, plus; they try to stay “innovative” so that they have excessive sales.
What´s trendy
#TrendyFashion is one of the most important factors that allows fast fashion to keep being increasingly consumable. There is a need in people of always having new trendy stuff.
Ask yourself this; are we really in style if we go out to the street and we see 20 girls wearing the exact same type of style that we are?
Perhaps, the fast fashion industry is the one who makes us believe that the style they present to us is actually ours and that we have to own it.
What Fashion Brands should I avoid at all costs?
Shein
Boohoo
Fashion Nova
Forever 21
GAP
Victoria's Secret
Zaful
Guess?
Romwe
Five Foxes

What about my style?
Let me ask you this; have you really wondered about your real style and what you actually like?
Instead of letting those brands to tell you what you should look like, how about we actually look for a cloth style we love? There's so much more stores that we don't know about yet.
Let yourself discover new proper and sustainable brands that define your personality.
There are local sustainable brands among us, but we don’t see them because fast fashion industry makes sure to blind that away from us.
Do your research, I assure you that you’ll find new eco-friendly and with a proper work ethic brands that you will love.
Let’s talk facts
Do you know what that blouse or skirt you love is made of? Petroleum.
Do you know what most of rivers around the world that were once beautiful are now being highly contaminated, everyday? Because of the textile fabrics where the clothes are made that throw residual water, which makes them a big part of world pollution.
Lead, mercury and arsenic are just a few toxic elements that are thrown to rivers.
200,00 tons of dyes end up every year in residual waters.
20% of water pollution comes from fashion fabrics.
Here’s another thing: water is HIGHLY used when making the clothes. Fashion industry makes a great impact on water waste.
So all we are doing when buying more and more clothes coming from this industry is supporting and allowing this tremendous problem to grow.
Organization SustainYourStyle, that gives us more information so we start creating a better fashion impact, shares us that: “each ton of dyed tissue may need up to 200 tons of fresh water”.
Cotton production also requires near 20,000 litters of water JUST for 1kg of cotton.
What about the oceans?
Desertification of the Aral Sea in Central Asia is one of the most notorious cases.
When you wash a synthetic piece of cloth made of polyester or nylon, nearly 700,000 micro-fibers are released, which are introduced to oceans when they are drained. The moment they reach to tiny aquatic organism’s mouth, they become food to fishes, which means they eventually reach our food chain with plastic. So yes, that’s how we end up eating plastic.
85% of residues made by humans are micro-fibers.
Synthetic fibers (polyester, acrylic acid, nylon, etc) last around 200 years in decomposing because they are not #biodegradable.
It’s estimated that nowadays clothes only last 3 years.
Now that you know the many consequences, what can you do as a consumer?
Every company dedicated to sale clothes has norms they follow according to their principals as an industry, where they stablish their benefits.
To make sure you’re actually buying clothes that are in favor of world care, see if their environmental norms are true and convincing.
Remember they can actually get sued if they do not follow what they´re stating. You can also check if they use toxic elements on all of their clothes.
Labour exploitation is also something they should not practice. If you want to learn more about this, check out my blog where I talk about it.
Think if it's actually worth buying cheap clothes that only damage the environment and their quality and resistance is not even that great.
Always choose to buy handmade clothes with a unique touch.
Even if it turns out to be a little bit more expensive than what we're used to see, it can last much longer and it gives you a style that no one will have! And you can finally shop while having a clear conscience.
This way, you’re supporting the environment around us and helping out local trade.
